Today is the second day of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India. Sheikh Hasina meet PM Narendra Modi today and will also hold extensive talks on many important issues. The two sides are also expected to sign agreements in key areas including defence, trade and river water sharing. It also includes a memorandum of understanding for the interim sharing of the waters of the Kushiyara river.
The overall strategic relationship between India and Bangladesh has been growing over the years, with the two prime ministers having met 12 times since 2015. In March last year, PM Modi had visited Bangladesh to attend events organized to mark the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 50 years of the liberation war. India also hosted several events to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1971 war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
Earlier on Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and businessman Gautam Adani met the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Hasina will also meet President Draupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during her stay. A few hours after coming to Delhi, Hasina also visited Dargah Nizamuddin Auliya.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had tweeted on her arrival in Delhi, “Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina was warmly received by Minister of State for Railways and Textiles Darshana Jardosh on her arrival in New Delhi. This visit will further strengthen the multi-faceted ties between the two countries.”
Hasina will visit Chishti’s dargah in Ajmer on Thursday
On Thursday, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh will visit the shrine of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Hasina’s delegation includes several ministers- Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Railway Minister Mohammad Noorul Islam Sujan and Liberation War Minister K Mozammel Haque.
