BJP Picks Jagdeep Dhankhar As Vice-President Candidate

Jagdeep Dhankhar: The National Democratic Alliance on Saturday named West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate for the Vice Presidential election to be held on August 6. Party President JP Nadda said after the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that farmer’s son Jagdeep Dhankhar would be the NDA’s vice-president candidate.

Earlier, many names were being discussed in BJP regarding the post of Vice President, but as usual, BJP surprised everyone this time too.

Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on 18 May 1951 in a small village Kithana in Rajasthan in a simple farmer family. Jagdeep Dhankhar completed his primary education in Kithana village school. He completed his schooling from Sainik School, Chittorgarh and then graduated from Rajasthan University, Jaipur. After this Dhankhar chose advocacy and started it from Rajasthan High Court. Later he was also the President of Rajasthan High Court Bar Association, Jaipur.

Jagdeep Dhankhar started politics with Janata Dal. During 1989-91, Dhankhar became a Member of Parliament representing the Janata Dal in the 9th Lok Sabha from the Jhunjhunu Lok Sabha constituency of Rajasthan.

Dhankhar was a Union minister in the VP Singh and Chandrashekhar government from 1989 to 1991. Dhankhar joined the Congress after cutting the ticket in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections.

After this, in 1993, contested from Kishangarh seat of Rajasthan on Congress ticket and became MLA. In 2003, Dhankhar left the Congress party and joined the BJP.

On 30 July 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed him as the Governor of West Bengal. Jagdeep Dhankhar has often made headlines for his disputes with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee since taking over as governor in July 2019. He accused the state government of excessive appeasement, communal patronage and mafia syndicate extortion. Congress leaders called Jagdeep Dhankhar communal.

The last date for filing nomination papers for the Vice Presidential election is July 19 and voting is scheduled for August 6. The tenure of current Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10. The electoral college consists of members of both the houses of Parliament, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to choose the Vice President of the country. The current strength of the Parliament is 780, of which only BJP has 394 MPs. More than 390 votes are required to win.
