BMW Eye Activated Lane Change Technology

It’s a straightforward but innovative idea. A quick glance at the appropriate outside rearview mirror is all it takes to confirm the vehicle’s suggestion for a lane shift when it has an Active Lane shift with eye activation. Without requiring human confirmation through the turn signal, the system does the necessary steering corrections with ease.

BMW states “With Active Lane Change with eye activation, the vehicle suggests a lane change, and the driver can confirm the lane change simply by looking in the corresponding outside rearview mirror. The Active Lane Change performs the necessary steering movements automatically. It is no longer necessary to confirm the lane change with the turn signal. This seamless interaction between the driver and the Active Lane Change provides a level of comfort and safety unique in the automotive sector.”

Launch timeline

According to reports, the new iX and 5-Series models will be the first to use the eye-activation lane change technology in March 2024. After one month, BMW will also start to integrate the technology into its other models, including the X5, X6, and X7.
