Adidas Store Caught Red-Handed with Covert Cameras Recording Customer PINs

Adidas: The Ministry of Home Affairs posted a photo of a sign outside an Adidas store in Vasant Kunj’s DLF Mall cautioning customers to be cautious when using their debit or credit cards. In the image, a camera is immediately positioned over a point-of-sale device.

CyberDost’s tweet also cautioned users to keep their One Time Passwords

It is clear from the image that the camera may be able to record the buyer’s PIN, putting the customer’s riches at risk of being stolen. The Personal Identification Number, or PIN, is required to make a debit or credit card withdrawal from a bank account. The camera appears to have been covertly positioned to perhaps capture the PIN of each card transaction, which poses a risk to the customer’s money in the bank. CyberDost’s tweet also cautioned users to keep their One Time Passwords, or OTPs, safe from prying eyes or possible thieves.

NCRB analysis found that while ATM-related fraud has decreased

A Twitter account named Cyber Dost tweeted a video with a caption, ” Protect your PIN to protect #money. Look for nearby cameras before entering your PIN or OTP in ATM or POS machine. @adidas store in DLF Mall Vasant Kunj, New Delhi has a camera right above the billing counter.” A NCRB analysis found that while ATM-related fraud has decreased, fraudulent credit and debit card transactions increased for the second consecutive year in 2021. The NCRB also reported a roughly 16% increase in cases of forgery and cheating over the previous year. Indian authorities are unable to keep up with the increase in cyberattacks, which range from small-scale banking and hiring frauds against individuals on social media to significant data breaches at huge institutions. In all, 52,974 instances of cybercrime were reported in 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) most recent data.
