The government’s “Make in India” campaign has received a huge boost due to Apple’s export performance in the month of December 2022. It made history by being the first company to ship cellphones from India worth $1 billion in a single month. It exported iPhones worth Rs 8100 crores in December 2022, assisting India’s gross smartphone exports to surpass Rs 10,000 crore.
Apple becomes first company to export smartphones worth $1 billion in a single month from India
According to the government’s data, Apple has surpassed Samsung to become the nation’s biggest exporter of mobile phones. The top mobile exporters from the country are Samsung and Apple.
Government of India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is being hailed as having been successfully implemented in light of Apple’s mobile phone export success story
Due to unveiling of Production Linked Scheme , India is slowly becoming Atmanirbhar in Mobile exports. Apple’s $ 1 billion dollar export of mobile phones is being celebrated as the success PLI scheme in India. PLI schemes have been extended to 13 other sectors including Smartphones.
The PLI scheme has been launched to make India into a manufacturing hub for smartphones, electronics and more. The manufacturers have to submit data on production, exports, and investments and jobs to the government on a regular basis as part of the scheme.

The PLI programme was established to turn India into a hub for manufacturing electronics, smartphones, and other products. As part of the programme, the manufacturers are required to routinely provide the government with data on their production, exports, investments, and employment.
Contract manufacturers for Apple are breaking new ground in the export of Indian-made mobile phones
Through its three contract manufacturers, Apple produces and exports various iPhone models, including the 12, 13, and 14. Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron, and Wistron are contract manufacturers in India with manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These smartphone manufacturers are participants in the Production Linked Incentive, which was started in August 2020.
Other smaller Indian companies are also exporting smart phones from India, demonstrating the beneficial effects of the country’s mobile phone exports.
According to government projections, India is expected to export mobile phones worth $9 billion in FY23, up from $5.8 billion in FY22.
As per Department of Commerce, exports of electronic items totaled $16.67 billion between April and December 2022, a rise of 51.56 percent over the same period in the previous year.
