Ayushman Bharat PM-Jay Scheme : The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018, marks its sixth anniversary today. The landmark healthcare initiative provides annual health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary care to over 55 crore beneficiaries across India.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Ministry of Health posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Celebrating 6 years of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY! Here’s to 6 years of making healthcare affordable for millions. Each Ayushman card represents hope and access to quality care. Let’s continue to strive for a healthier India where everyone thrives!”
Extension of Benefits to Senior Citizens
In a recent development, the Union Cabinet, on September 11, approved extending the scheme’s benefits to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income. This move is expected to further increase healthcare access for the elderly population, providing much-needed financial protection.
Key Achievements of the Scheme
Since its inception, the scheme has covered 7.37 crore hospital admissions, with women beneficiaries making up 49% of the total. The scheme has provided health benefits amounting to over ₹1 lakh crore, significantly easing the financial burden on families across the country. All members of eligible families, regardless of their age, are entitled to coverage under PM-JAY, continuing the government’s efforts to make healthcare affordable and accessible for all.
