Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Yojana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a landmark health insurance scheme under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), extending coverage to all Indian citizens aged 70 and above. This expanded benefit will provide comprehensive healthcare coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh annually for senior citizens across income categories, addressing a population of approximately 6 crore individuals within 4.5 crore households.
Inclusive Coverage for All Senior Citizens
Under the scheme, senior citizens from poor to affluent backgrounds, regardless of their existing health insurance status, can avail healthcare services at AB-PMJAY empanelled hospitals. Existing Ayushman cardholders will need to reapply and complete eKYC for the new benefits. The program is operational across 33 states and union territories, with exceptions in Delhi, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Key Features and Application Process
- Top-Up for AB-PMJAY Beneficiaries: Seniors already under AB-PMJAY will receive an additional Rs 5 lakh cover annually.
- Eligibility: Any individual aged 70+ as verified by Aadhaar can apply.
- Flexible Options: Those under schemes like CGHS and ECHS may choose between their existing scheme or AB-PMJAY.
The initiative builds on the success of the AB-PMJAY, which has funded over 7.37 crore hospital admissions, delivering health benefits valued at more than Rs 1 lakh crore.
