A top official said on Friday that despite 160 requests from Chinese toy manufacturers for the BIS certification mark ISI during the previous two years, none of them have received a BIS licence.
No Chinese Toy Maker granted BIS License in last two years
Addressing a Press Conference, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari confirmed “ No Chinese Toy Manufacturer has been granted a BIS license till date”.
He claimed that over 1,000 toy manufacturers in India had BIS licences, of which 982 are domestic producers and 29 are foreign businesses. Maximum 14 of the international toy manufacturers in India are from Vietnam, he claimed.
File Complaint with BIS against any seller selling Made in China Toy
Tiwari responded to a question during the press conference convened to celebrate the BIS’s 75th anniversary by saying that if a vendor is selling a toy that was made in China, a complaint can be filed with the BIS.
According to Tiwari, 160 Chinese toy manufacturers have submitted applications for BIS licences since January 2021, but none of them have received approval because the Covid-19 outbreak prevented them from completing the necessary steps.
Ministry of Commerce and Industry issues Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020
The Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020 was issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2020, and it went into effect on January 1st, 2021. This directive mandates that all toy producers in India obtain a BIS licence.
As per Tiwari, who was speaking about the execution of the requirement for the mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery across 288 districts, 300 districts would soon be subject to the requirement.
According to the BIS, 8.65 crore gold jewellery items have been marked as of this writing during the fiscal year 2022–2023. From 1,37,315 to 1,51,052 BIS registered jewellers were in operation in 2022–2023.
13,737 licences have been given between 2022 and 2023, according to the BIS.

Later that evening, Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the crowd and stated that for India to become a developed country, the BIS must acknowledge and appreciate the value of quality.
Goyal stated that this is a fantastic opportunity for all of us to commit to making quality our aim and to consider how we can help keep India a developed country.
Unless we all understand and appreciate the significance of quality, he continued, India would not evolve into a developed country.
