Budget 2024: The allocations for six “core of core schemes” in India’s 2024-25 budget have seen a notable increase to ₹1.12 lakh crore, marking a 3% rise from the revised estimates of ₹1.08 lakh crore for 2023-24. This increment represents a substantial 30% surge compared to the budget estimates of ₹86144 crore for the ongoing fiscal year.
Key Highlights:
- The six core schemes encompass crucial initiatives such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), National Social Assistance Program, and various umbrella programs aimed at the development of minorities, vulnerable groups, scheduled tribes, and scheduled castes.
- Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her sixth consecutive budget, allocated ₹86000 crore for MNREGS in 2023-24, reflecting a significant 43% increase from the budget estimates of ₹60000 for the same period.
- The budget also includes ₹3.8 lakh crore for all other centrally sponsored schemes designated as “core,” such as integrated health and nutrition programs. This allocation represents a rise from the revised estimates of ₹3.3 lakh crore in 2023-24, with the budget estimates standing at ₹3.8 lakh crore.
- Notable among the increased allocations is a 3% boost (₹21,200 crore) for key programs addressing malnutrition, including the Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 initiatives by the women and child development ministry.
- Finance Minister Sitharaman emphasized the consolidation of various schemes for maternal and childcare, bringing them under a comprehensive program to enhance implementation synergy.
- The budget estimates for FY24 for Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 stand at ₹20554 crore, indicating a 1.4% increase compared to the revised estimate allocation of ₹20263 crore.
Sitharaman highlighted the accelerated upgradation of anganwadi centers under Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 to enhance nutrition delivery, early childhood care, and development.
