World Health Organization: Many people use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar because they believe that sugar is unhealthy and just necessary for flavour. In the world health organization‘s (WHO) research, startling information about artificial sweeteners has surfaced. The news agency Reuters reported that Aspartame, one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in the world, has been linked to cancer by WHO research. This indicates that ingesting aspartame carries a risk of cancer. Everything from Coca-Cola‘s diet soda to Mars Xtra chewing gum and several other drinks contain aspartame. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will first classify it as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in July.
WHO Expert Committee Determines Safe Aspartame Consumption Levels
How much aspartame-containing food or drink a person can consume safely is not yet known. A separate WHO expert committee on food additives makes recommendations on the maximum amount of dangerous substances that a person should ingest, in consultation with national regulatory bodies. The Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the WHO provides it.
WHO’s JECFA Scrutinizes Aspartame Use, Emphasizes Moderation
This year, the usage of aspartame is being examined by the WHO’s Committee on Additives JECFA. According to the JECFA, aspartame is safe if used in moderation everyday. For instance, a 60 kg adult who consumes 12–36 cans of diet Coke per day (depending on the aspartame content) is at danger. Significantly, aspartame has been the subject of in-depth research. According to a study conducted last year in France on 100,000 adults, those who regularly eat artificial sweeteners—including aspartame—have a slightly increased chance of developing cancer.
