Electricity demand increased by 1.3 percent, consumption crossed 34 billion units in first 10 days of December

Electricity consumption in the country increased by 1.3 percent to 34.23 billion units in the first 10 days of December as compared to the same period last year. This information has been received from the data of the Ministry of Power. In the same period last year, electricity consumption was 33.78 billion units. The electricity consumption in the entire month of December, 2020 was 105.62 billion units. Whereas in December 2019, it was 101.08 billion units.

Experts say that the main reason for the improvement in electricity demand in December is the spurt in economic activities across the country. In the first 10 days of December, the peak power demand or peak power supply during the day stood at 169.12 GW. It was 165.42 GW recorded in the same period of December, 2020. The peak power demand for the whole of December, 2020 was 182.78 GW as compared to 170.49 GW in December, 2019.

In November this year, electricity consumption stood at 99.37 billion units, registering a growth of 2.6 per cent. It was 96.88 billion units in November last year and 93.94 billion units in November 2019. Electricity consumption grew by 3.3 per cent to 112.79 billion units in October, compared to 109.17 billion units in the same month last year.

After the second wave of Covid-19 in April this year, many states imposed lockdown, which led to a decline in the demand for industrial and commercial electricity. These curbs were gradually removed after the reduction in Covid infection.

In May this year, electricity consumption had increased by 6.6 per cent year-on-year to 108.80 units. In May, 2020 it was 102.08 billion units. Electricity consumption in June increased by almost 9 percent to 114.48 billion units. It was 105.08 billion units in June 2020.
