When Elon Musk took control of Twitter in a highly publicised deal in October of last year, one of his first acts as the new owner was to remove Parag Agrawal, the CEO at the time. Along with him, Musk dismissed other senior-level company leaders, and eventually thousands of workers also lost their jobs as a result. The platform that Twitter is today, known as X, is considerably different from what it was under Agrawal’s leadership.
The Wall Street Journal has now revealed that Elon Musk and Parag Agrawal had dinner together in 2022, and that the latter wasn’t too impressed. The article is based on an excerpt from Musk’s biography, which will be released on September 12.
When Elon Musk met Parag Agrawal
According to an excerpt from the book, Parag Agrawal and Elon Musk had dinner together in March 2022 before Musk made a bid to purchase Twitter. Musk had described Agrawal as a “really nice guy” during their meeting, but that isn’t what it takes to be a CEO. According to the passage, Musk believed that being popular with people wasn’t a requirement for being a CEO.
After the meal, Musk reportedly quipped, “What Twitter needs is a fire-breathing dragon,” Isaacson continued. And Parag isn’t that either.
Prior to their meeting, Musk’s purchase of Twitter stock had come to light. By the spring of 2022, Musk had also become Twitter’s largest shareholder.
In October, after Twitter fired Parag Agrawal, Musk took over as the company’s CEO. But Musk resigned from the position in June of this year, and Linda Yaccarino was chosen to fill it.
