Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now called X, has suggested the introduction of a monthly fee for all users. This move is aimed at reducing the presence of automated bots on the platform.
Musk, who acquired the platform for $44 billion in October last year, has been implementing various changes since taking over. These changes include significant layoffs, the introduction of a paid premium option, reduction in content moderation, and the reinstatement of previously banned accounts, including former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In July, Musk revealed that the platform had experienced a roughly 50% drop in advertising revenue
Bots, which are automated accounts run by computer programs, are a common issue on X. They are often used to artificially amplify political messages or promote hate speech.
During a recent conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk addressed the issue of online anti-Semitism and the platform’s efforts to combat the use of bots to spread harmful content. Musk mentioned that the company is considering implementing a small monthly fee for using the X platform as a way to deter the proliferation of bots. He explained that even a minor fee would significantly increase the effective cost of running bots, as users would need a new payment method for each bot.
Currently, X offers a Premium subscription option that costs $8 per month in the United States, with varying charges based on the user’s location.
