Twitter: Elon Musk announced on Thursday that he has found a new CEO for Twitter but declined to reveal who it is. He also stated that he will soon take on the position of chief technical officer at the social media site. Musk Tweeted, “Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks! My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.”
Rumours circulate about potential candidates for Elon Musk’s successor as Twitter CEO
Though rumours about Musk’s successor abounded among tech and media insiders, as well as on Blind, an anonymous messaging app for tech workers, it was unknown who Musk had picked as his successor because he had never before announced any potential contenders. According to two Silicon Valley executives and a former Hollywood executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the rumours, Musk may choose Linda Yaccarino, the top advertising sales executive at Comcast’s NBCUniversal, to serve as the CEO of the social media firm. On Thursday, Marissa Mayer, the former CEO of Yahoo, was mentioned in chats between Twitter employees, a staff member claimed. A former employee who saw the remarks claims that former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Shivon Zilis, a senior executive at Elon Musk’s brain-chip startup Neuralink, were also among the people discussed by Twitter employees on Blind.
Top female executives from Musk’s other companies potentially in the running for Twitter CEO role
According to Jason Benowitz, senior portfolio manager at CI Roosevelt, top female executives from Musk’s other companies, like SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and Tesla Inc. Chair Robyn Denholm, might potentially be included. Musk announced he would leave his position as CTO and move into the executive chair position at Twitter, where he would be in charge of the company’s products, software, and operations. Analysts reported that the announcement helped allay some investor concerns about Musk’s active participation at Twitter as Tesla shares closed 2.1% higher on Thursday. Musk has previously stated his intention to select a new Twitter CEO. A poll on Twitter that Musk conducted in December received 57.5% of the vote for him to leave his position as head of the social media site. The initial two weeks of the billionaire’s ownership of Twitter in October were characterised by fast change. The previous CEO of Twitter, Parag Agrawal, and other senior executives were swiftly ousted, and in November, he laid off half of the company’s workers. In a crucial area of his dispute with Twitter’s board over his back-and-forth on the $44 billion acquisition of the firm, he said that he would “defeat” spam bots on the network.
