Google may appoint a well-known manufacturing and policy expert as India’s policy head, so that the company can better deal with legal challenges in the country and expand hardware assembly facilities.
Sources said on condition of anonymity that Microsoft (Microsoft Corp) senior engineering executive Srinivas Reddy may join Google by the end of this year. Reddy has also previously worked in Apple’s regulatory team and has also been associated with the Indian unit of Swedish telecom gear company Ericsson AB.
According to sources, Reddy’s experience will be of immense benefit to Google, which is looking for partners in India for assembling its Pixel range of smartphones. The company intends to make scope for its production outside China.
The start of Pixel production in India can also encourage local manufacturing of Google’s other hardware products. The entry of this executive will also help Google deal with regulatory challenges. Significantly, the company is facing charges under antitrust law in India.
Emails sent to Google and Reddy in this regard did not elicit any response
Google’s former India policy head Archana Gulati resigned from the company last year. Google is one of those global technology firms for which the Indian market is very important. The company is adding local language features to its services. Also, it is looking for ways to make its Android phones cheaper, so that more and more users can be added in a market like India. The company plans to open a Global Financial-Technology Center in Gujarat International Finance Tech-City.
