An ex-Google employee who is currently employed by Amazon has revealed, in a startling confession that has rocked the IT community, that he received a fat ₹3 crore ($370,000) a year while doing very little work for the massive e-commerce company. This confession has spurred a larger discussion over whether IT companies overhire, allowing workers to go unnoticed while producing little to no noteworthy work.
Drawing a ₹3 Crore Salary for “Nothing”
This widely shared confession was made on Blind, an anonymous discussion site for professionals to freely share their real-life work experiences. The Senior Technical Program Manager at Amazon openly discussed his experience of receiving a sizable salary for almost 1.5 years despite hardly working at all.
Before joining Amazon, he was part of Google’s layoffs. It’s surprising that more than a year and a half later, Amazon is still unaware of his plan.
Focus on Meetings Over Real Work
The Senior Program Manager described his daily schedule in his confession, acknowledging that he attends meetings for the majority of the day without really contributing anything. “My current day-to-day is saying no to other teams wanting to integrate with my team or making them take on 95% of the work,” he stated.
He also revealed that during his entire tenure at Amazon, he has only resolved seven tickets and created one automated dashboard. Interestingly, he used ChatGPT to complete this task in just three days but claimed it took three months to build, further illustrating how little effort he has put into his job.
Viral Admission Raises Eyebrows
In addition to his obvious lack of output, the employee’s post went viral because of the astounding income he continues to receive. With a $370,000 overall salary that includes stock options and bonuses, he is among the highest paid tech workers. Many have questioned the effectiveness of staffing practices at large internet companies like Amazon, given that someone in such a high-paying post could get away with accomplishing so little.
Overstaffing at Tech Giants – A Growing Concern?
The ongoing discussion around excessive staff at major tech companies like Google, Amazon, and others is fuelled by this finding. These businesses frequently hire large numbers of people, particularly during economic booms, and offer substantial wages to entice top talent. But as this story shows, there might be flaws and gaps in the system that let workers go unrecognised and make minimal contributions to the company’s success.
Do tech companies just overstaff in order to retain their talent pool, or do subpar management techniques allow certain employees to fall between the cracks? It begs serious questions about how much real work people making such large wages are actually doing, and whether increased oversight is necessary to stop this kind of exploitation.
