The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), a non-political organization representing Hindus, has recently called for a nationwide boycott of Starbucks. According to Ramesh Shinde, the spokesperson for HJS, the boycott is motivated by Starbucks’ use of only halal meat in their products. HJS volunteers visited Starbucks outlets and recorded videos wherein the sales staff confirmed the use of halal meat.

Shinde explained that any establishment selling halal products is required to obtain certification from an Islamic authority, and these certification funds are often directed towards dubious purposes. He emphasized that it’s unjust to impose halal meat on non-Muslim consumers. The HJS has been actively engaged in a campaign against what it terms the “halal economy” for the past several months.

The HJS’s call for a boycott is rooted in their objection to the use of halal meat in Starbucks’ products, which they argue disregards the preferences and beliefs of non-Muslim customers. The organization’s stance highlights concerns about the funding mechanisms associated with halal certification and how these funds might be used.
