Elon Musk has been invited to set up business in the southern state of Karnataka by the Congress-led government there.
In a tweet, MB Patil, the minister of commerce and industries for Karnataka, stated that his state is the best place for Tesla to expand into India.
“If Tesla considers setting up a plant in India, Karnataka, with its great potential and capabilities, I must say is The Destination,” he added. “As a progressive state and a thriving hub of innovation and technology, Karnataka stands ready to support and provide the necessary facilities for Tesla and other ventures of Elon Musk, including Starlink,” Patil wrote, tagging Musk’s Twitter handle.
According to Patil, Karnataka is committed to being the centre for manufacturing and technology 5.0 in order to advance the state over the coming decades.
Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and Twitter, was also met by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the current State visit to the US and urged to look into investment potential in India’s rapidly growing commercial space industry and in electric mobility.
After meeting with PM Modi, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk told reporters that he was extremely optimistic about India’s future and noted that it holds more promise than any other major nation,”I am tentatively planning to visit India again next year. I am looking forward to it,” Musk added. Musk, responding to questions from reporters, said he was confident that his car company Tesla will be in India “as soon as humanly possible”. “I would like to thank PM Modi for his support and hopefully, we will be able to announce something in the not-too-distant future.”
When asked when Tesla might visit India, Musk responded “We don’t want to jump the gun with an announcement but it’s quite likely that there will be a significant investment for India in the future.”
In a quick counter question by reporters asking what changed his mind about Tesla’s investments in India, he smilingly said, “I have never changed my mind”.By the end of 2023, Tesla is reportedly planning to reveal the location of its new facility. Musk expressed interest in expanding his Starlink services to India as well. Musk’s firm SpaceX runs Starlink, a satellite-based internet service provider.India wants to utilise the potential of the private sector in the space industry.
