Major Tech Issue Shuts Down Windows Systems Worldwide; Here’s Microsoft’s Clarification

Global Outage Shuts Down Windows Systems: Microsoft's Response and Fix

Microsoft Outage

Microsoft Outage: Millions of Windows computers worldwide have experienced unexpected shutdowns or restarts due to a serious technical problem. Microsoft Inc. has identified that a recent update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike is the primary cause.

What Went Wrong?

Microsoft’s Service Health Status updates indicate that a “configuration change in a portion of our Azure backend workloads” is the cause of the issue. This modification resulted in disruptions between computing and storage resources, which broke connectivity. Numerous Microsoft 365 services have been impacted by these issues.

CrowdStrike’s Role and Response

CrowdStrike Engineering, a cybersecurity firm working with Microsoft, has pinpointed a content deployment related to the issue and has since reverted those changes. They have also provided steps for Windows users to resolve the issue.

Steps to Resolve the Issue

  1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Go to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike directory.
  3. Find and delete the file named C-00000291*.sys.
  4. Restart your computer normally.

Microsoft’s Efforts to Fix the Problem

Microsoft has been actively updating users through detailed threads on X, formerly known as Twitter. They stated, “Multiple services are continuing to see improvements in availability as our mitigation actions progress. More details can be found within the admin center under MO821132.”

Gradual Improvements and Continuous Efforts

While Microsoft has observed positive trends in service availability, they continue to take steps to mitigate the issue. Services like PowerBI, Fabric, Teams, and the Microsoft 365 admin center have been affected. However, some services, including Defender, OneNote, OneDrive for Business, and SharePoint Online, have partially recovered.
