The streaming giant is against password sharing, which will disappoint a lot of Netflix freeloaders. In fact, the corporation has terminated non-household members from the accounts of its US paying customers by announcing new procedures to restrict viewership to users residing in the same household.
Sharing login information with someone outside of your family is no longer permitted for consumers on regular or premium subscriptions, which range from $15.50 to $20 per month.
Netflix has however added a feature that allows customers to share their subscription with someone in the same home for an extra $8 a month, delivering a lower price compared to the regular stand-alone basic plan.
Netflix promises that everyone living in the same household will still be able to stream their favourite TV shows and films, whether at home, on the go, or even while on vacation, despite the fact that the company has not yet revealed the specifics of how it will authenticate subscriber identities or accounts.
According to estimates from 2021, password sharing cost the corporation $6 billion a year. Over 100 million users exploited shared passwords, which caused Netflix to lose out on a sizeable chunk of its revenue potential.
This problem was especially important because the company’s subscriber growth was sluggish and in 2022 it had its biggest customer losses in more than a decade, losing 200,000 customers in the first quarter.
