Nitin Gadkari: The Indian government has introduced a new scheme to provide cashless treatment for victims of road accidents involving motor vehicles. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the initiative in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The program is currently being piloted in Chandigarh and Assam.
Under the scheme, eligible accident victims can receive health benefit packages for trauma and polytrauma care at designated hospitals covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPM-JAY). The coverage provides up to Rs 1.5 lakh for a maximum period of seven days from the date of the accident.
Scope and Benefits of the Scheme
The scheme aims to alleviate the financial burden on accident victims and their families by covering immediate medical expenses without requiring upfront payments. By leveraging the existing ABPM-JAY infrastructure, the program integrates seamlessly with the current health benefits framework, ensuring prompt and efficient care for those affected.
Minister Gadkari highlighted that the pilot program’s implementation in Chandigarh and Assam will help assess the scheme’s effectiveness and address any potential issues before a broader rollout across the country. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and improving emergency medical response systems.
