Oracle lays off : Software major Oracle has laid off hundreds of employees from its health unit, according to three people who are aware of this development.
Oracle’s health unit includes Cerner, which the former acquired for $28.3 billion in December 2022. These layoffs come on the back of thousands of other job cuts in corporate America due to high inflation and rising interest rates.
An Insider report says that Oracles laid off “thousands of employees in the unit” as late as May this year. Cerner has approximately 28,000 employees.
Oracle hasn’t responded to this news.
Livemint says the layoffs “were largely due to Cerner’s challenged work with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, which hired Cerner to replace its homemade medical records with new technology.”
Troubled partnership
Oracle’s layoffs are due to the troubled partnership between Cerner and the Department of Veteran Affairs. The latter has said that many patients have reported that their data was leaked outside.
However, Cerner said that its database is safe and until any patient consents, their data won’t be shared with anyone. The Company assured that its customers remain anonymous.
The Department of Veteran Affairs has halted its partnership with Oracle-owned Cerner based on these concerns.
Oracle has a huge workforce outside the United States in Europe and India. It is unclear whether these layoffs will apply to the Company’s non-U.S. markets.
Four weeks’ severance pay
All laid-off employees will receive severance pay equal to four weeks, plus one additional week for every year of service and a payout of vacation days, according to Reuters.
Lately, many multinationals have cut back on their jobs in huge numbers. The affected roles belong to sales, marketing, legal and administration jobs.
Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and several online companies are trying to protect their bottom lines by cutting back on their workforce.
