There has been no change in the prices of petrol and diesel across major Indian cities on Wednesday, March 2, 2022. This is the longest period when the prices have remained unchanged, ever since the daily revision of prices began in June 2017.
In Delhi, fuel is relatively cheaper than the rest of the metros because the state government had earlier decided to reduce the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on petrol, bringing down the price of the fuel in the city by about Rs 8 per litre.
This came after the Central government cut excise duty on November 4, 2021, to give relief from prices that had touched an all-time high.
The government cut the duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 10 a litre resulting in an equivalent reduction in retail pump rates. Following this, many states and Union Territories cut local sales or value-added tax (VAT) to give further relief to consumers.
