The UK Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the extradition of wanted diamond trader Nirav Modi to India in the PNB scam. Now it is decided to come to India.
The last hearing on Nirav’s extradition took place in Britain’s Westminster Court in February. The court also approved to send Nirav to India.
Judge Samuel Gooji had said that Nirav Modi would have to answer in the case going on in India. He admitted that there is enough evidence against Nirav Modi.
The decision came after a 2-year legal battle. Nirav Modi is accused of committing fraud of around 14 thousand crores by taking a loan from PNB. He escaped from the country in January 2018 after the scam surfaced.
The Central Investigation Agency (CBI) said on Friday, ‘The England court had given a decision in favor of the CBI and said that the Home Department would take a decision on extradition.
Today, the Home Department has also cleared the extradition file. However, Nirav Modi still has the option to appeal in the High Court.
Significantly, on bringing India, Nirav Modi will be kept in Arthur Road Jail of Mumbai. The jail administration said that Nirav Modi will be kept in one of the three cells of Barrack No-12 with a very high security.
Special arrangements have been made for security and strict monitoring in all three closets. In 2019, Maharashtra’s jail department had informed the Center about the status of the jail and the facilities to keep Nirav Modi.
