PM Modi: The Congress claimed on Thursday that the “corruption” in shell companies connected to the conglomerate was strengthening and reiterated its demand for the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) in yet another scathing attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre over new allegations against the Adani Group. Rahul Gandhi, the party’s leader, said during a press conference held in Mumbai on the sidelines of the INDIA bloc meeting that major international financial publications have raised very pertinent questions about the Adani issue and that it is crucial that India’s economic environment have “level playing fields and transparency” at a time when the G20 Summit is just around the corner.
Rahul Gandhi’s Strong Words Raise Questions on Special Company Linked to Prime Minister
“The leaders coming to India to attend the G20 Summit are going to be asking what is this special company that is owned by a gentleman close to the Prime Minister and why is it that in an economy like India, this gentleman is being given a free ride,” Rahul Gandhi said. Demanding a JPC probe into the matter, the Congress leader further said, “It is very important that PM Narendra Modi clears his name and categorically explains what is going on. At the very least, a JPC should be allowed and a thorough investigation should take place. I don’t understand why the PM is not forcing an investigation? Why is he quiet and why are people who are responsible not put behind bars? This is raising very serious questions on the Prime Minister just before G20 leaders arrive.”
Congress Reacts to OCCRP’s Claims of Opaque Investment in Adani Group
The Congress leader made this statement in response to claims made by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), a group supported by George Soros and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, that millions of dollars were invested in the Adani Group’s publicly traded stocks using “opaque” funds, ostensibly concealing the involvement of family-affiliated business partners. The OCCRP findings comes after earlier allegations that the Adani conglomerate had engaged in accounting fraud, stock price manipulation, and improper use of tax havens.
Adani Group Strongly Counters Allegations
The Adani Group, however, “categorically” disputed the accusations. The business referred to the journalists’ group as “recycled” and a “bidding by Soros-funded interests supported by a section of the foreign media to revive the meritless Hindenburg report.” “Despite the Modi government’s best efforts, the truth will not stay suppressed forever. However, the full story about the flow of benami funds into the Adani Group, how foreign citizens came to play a role in critical national infrastructure and how PM (Narendra) Modi ‘violated rules, regulations and norms to enrich his close friends’ can only be revealed by a JPC,” news agency PTI quoted Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh as saying earlier in the day.
