Officials reported that R Krishnakumar, a veteran group member and close confidante of Ratan Tata, passed on Sunday night. Krishnakumar, a native of Kerala who held a number of positions inside the organisation, including managing its hospitality division Indian Hotels, was 84 years old.

They said that the Padma Shri recipient experienced a heart attack on Sunday at his house in the nation’s financial centre. N Chandrasekaran, the current chairman of Tata Sons, expressed regret for Krishnakumar’s “enormous contribution” to the Tata Group.

“I had the good opportunity to know him, and what stood out about him as a person was his profound sense of compassion. He’s always aspired to make a difference in the lives of others who were less fortunate. We sincerely miss him and wish for his soul to rest in peace, Chandrasekaran said in a statement.

The Thalassery-born Krishnakumar helped fortify the group’s links with the southern state, according to a tweet from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also expressed sympathy to the family. After leaving managerial positions, Krishnakumar continued to be involved with the Tata Trusts. He is said to have been a member of the team that assisted Ratan Tata in the Cyrus Mistry removal incident.
