‘Something is fishy,’ Kharge questions Modi government’s transparency on Adani problem

Mallikarjun Kharge

Mallikarjun Kharge: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge intensified his criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre on Thursday as the Parliament’s Budget Session was adjourned sine die amid a commotion caused by the Opposition’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee investigation into the Adani issue. Kharge claimed that “something is fishy” because their demand has not yet been met.

JPC investigation into the Adani case

“Something is fishy that is why the government is not agreeing to order a JPC probe into the Adani issue,” Kharge said in a press conference. Both the first and second legs of Parliament’s budget session were marked by commotion, chanting, and demonstrations as opposition parties obstructed business in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha by calling for a JPC investigation into the Adani case. The government should not be afraid when it would have a majority on the panel, Kharge questioned, adding that “the Modi government talks a lot about democracy but does not walk the walk.”

Government was trying to divert attention-Kharge

The Congress president claimed that the government was trying to “divert attention” from the Adani issue by pressuring Rahul Gandhi to apologise for his remarks in London. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration were cornered, Kharge remarked, “They didn’t perform any other thing other than installing new engines in outdated trains and then flagging it off while making a protracted speech. What do you (PM Modi) need to launch a train; you have local MPs to do it. On the final day of the Budget session of Parliament in Delhi, opposition MPs organised a “Tiranga March” from Parliament to Vijay Chowk earlier in the day. The final day of the second leg of the budget session on Thursday saw major turmoil in Parliament as the Opposition repeatedly chanted for a JPC investigation into the Adani problem in both Houses.
