Stock Market Update: On the first trading day of the New Year, equity benchmarks got off to a good start and finished with solid gains thanks to purchasing in index heavyweights Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank despite a strong trend in European markets.

The Stock Market Update says that the 30-share BSE Sensex increased 327.05 points or 0.54 percent on Monday to end the day at 61167.79 . It increased by 382.05 points, or 0.62 percent, to 61222.79 during the trading day. The NSE Nifty, a more inclusive index, increased 92.15 points or 0.51 percent to close at 18197.45.
Stock Market Update: Top winners and laggards
The notable winners of the Sensex pack included Tata Steel, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries, NTPC, and Bharti Airtel. However, among the top laggards were Asian Paints, Titan, Tech Mahindra, Nestle, and Hindustan Unilever.
Rupee falls 14 paise to close at 82.75 against US dollar
The rupee had a lacklustre start to the new year, losing 14 paise to end the day Monday at 82.75 (provisional) against the US dollar as continuing foreign fund outflows and rising crude oil prices dampened investor confidence. Forex traders claimed that increases in crude oil prices and persistent outflows of foreign funds offset the assistance provided by strong domestic equities and a weak American dollar.
The rupee depreciated against the dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market, opening at 82.66 against the dollar. The intraday high was 82.56, and the intraday low was 82.78.

BSE figures show that as of Monday, January 2 at 2.51 p.m., investors had bid 91,30,540 equity shares, or 1.63 times, as many as the 56,10,000 equity shares that were made available for subscription. The allocation for qualified institutional bidders was reserved 38%, while the amount for non-institutional investors garnered 1.58 times as much interest as the merchants’ quota.
