Top 5 Stocks Of The Day: On the Nifty, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Axis Bank were among the top gainers, while top losers were LTIMindtree, HDFC Bank, NTPC, Titan Company, and Asian Paints. Bank, FMCG, IT, metal, and power were among the industries that saw declines of 0.3–1%, whereas auto, capital goods, healthcare, oil and gas, and real estate saw increases of 0.3–0.7%. The BSE smallcap and midcap indexes finished the day flat.

Sensex and NSE Nifty50

The Nifty was down 109.70 points, or 0.51 percent, at 21,462.30, and the Sensex was down 313.90 points, or 0.44 percent, at 71,186.86 at the closing. Approximately 1481 shares rose, 1737 shares fell, and 70 shares were unchanged. The Indian benchmark indices concluded the extremely tumultuous session down, with the Nifty closing below 21,500.

Sharp single-day decline in the stock of HDFC Bank

All mutual fund (MF) schemes that contain shares of HDFC Bank were impacted by the dramatic one-day drop in the bank’s stock on January 17, which was down more than 8%. On January 17, the NAV of index funds that track the Nifty 50 fell by 2% on a single day, while funds invested in the banking sector had a loss of up to 3.5%. As of December 31, 2023, 532 equity-oriented mutual fund schemes had shares in HDFC Bank in its portfolios. 422 of them are under active management.
