Twitter: Twitter has accused Microsoft of using the social media platform’s data without its permission. It has also charged the tech behemoth of sharing Twitter’s data with the US government, the New York Times reported on May 18, 2023. Furthermore, the NYT has revealed that Microsoft had breached an agreement with Twitter on how to consume the latter’s data.Microsoft’s ‘unauthorized activities’ could invite a lawsuit from Twitter, Elon Musk hinted recently. On April 30, 2023, Musk had posted “lawsuit time’ on his timeline. In the same post, Musk charged Microsoft with using Twitter’s data for training its AI programs.
Microsoft’s ChatGPT, an AI-powered program, has disrupted several jobs and companies worldwide.
In its response to Twitter’s charges, Microsoft denied it pays for any Twitter data but affirmed to resolve all mutual issues in a friendly manner.
Expanding the revenue base
Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in 2022 and expanding the social media platform’s revenue base has been his key concern.All legacy blue tick handles have to pay a certain amount per month to retain their blue ticks. Furthermore, developers have to pay fees for connecting with the Twitter API. APIs are software interfaces that allow two platforms – in this case, Twitter and the developers – to talk to each other.Musk has also changed Twitter’s leadership for revenue growth. He has recently hired Linda Yaccarino, former head of NBC Universal, to drive the platform’s advertising.
Under Satya Nadella’s leadership, Microsoft has transformed itself immensely. While Windows and MS Office still contribute significantly to Microsoft’s revenues, the Company has made major forays into cloud and artificial intelligence technologies. Microsoft has also refurbished Edge, its proprietary, cross-platform browser that now utilizes AI. As of May 2023, Microsoft’s market capitalization was $2.36 trillion.
