UP Electricity Bill Rules: In a bid to resolve persistent billing discrepancies, Kesco (Kanpur Electricity Supply Company) is set to install 6.5 lakh smart meters across the city. This move is expected to streamline billing processes and provide consumers with real-time data on their daily electricity usage, directly accessible via a mobile app that Kesco is developing.
The app will allow consumers to monitor their electricity consumption on a daily basis, helping them manage their usage more efficiently. Kesco officials have assured that the smart meters will eliminate billing issues within the next two years, addressing a common complaint from consumers who often visit Kesco offices for billing-related problems.
Two-Year Timeline for Complete Implementation
Currently, smart meters have been installed in 1.5 lakh homes, and Kesco plans to complete the installation in all 6.5 lakh homes within two years. The project, with an allocated budget of ₹582 crore, is part of Kesco’s effort to modernize its infrastructure and improve customer service.
Ongoing Meter Checks and New Features
As part of the initiative, Kesco is also conducting checks on 30,000 households where meters have already been installed to ensure accuracy. Once fully operational, the smart meters will replace traditional billing methods, with bills only generated for meters above 25 kilowatts. For all other consumers, smart prepaid meters will be installed.
Kesco Director Rakesh Varshney stated that consumers will not incur additional charges for installing these new meters. Through the mobile app, consumers will have access to detailed information about their electricity usage, including how many units were consumed each day and the corresponding cost.
This initiative is expected to provide transparency and ease of access for consumers, significantly reducing the need for physical visits to Kesco offices.
