Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi vowed Wednesday to punish those who offend Beijing, state media reported, as the country seethes over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has enraged China. The latter has announced military manoeuvres in retaliation, even as Taiwanese officials welcomed her to the country.
“Today, our delegation… came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan and we are proud of our enduring friendship,” Pelosi added during her meeting with the Taiwanese president.
Nancy Pelosi said. “We will firmly uphold our nation’s sovereignty & continue to hold the line of defence. At the same time, we wish to cooperate & work with unity with all democracies around the world to safeguard democratic values.”
US Speaker Pelosi said that America has made a promise to stand with Taiwan. “On this strong foundation, we’ve a thriving partnership grounded in self-government & self-determination focused on mutual security in the region & world committed to economic prosperity,” she said.
“Taiwan is flourishing democracy. It has proven to world that hope, courage & determination can build peaceful & prosperous future despite challenges it faces. Now, more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, that’s the message we bring in today,” said US Speaker Pelosi.
Just after Pelosi’s arrival, China announced a series of military operations and drills, which followed its promises of “resolute and strong measures” if Pelosi went through with her visit.
