Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma has resigned as the chairman of the steering committee for the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. On Sunday, he sent his resignation letter to the interim chief of the party, Sonia Gandhi.
Sharma told the Congress chief that he was overlooked in the consultation process, news agency PTI reported. However, Sharma has assured that he will campaign for Congress candidates.
Meanwhile, quoting sources, news agency PTI reported that in his letter to Sonia, Sharma has said that there can be no bargaining with his self-esteem. Sharma’s resignation ahead of the assembly elections in Himachal is being seen as a major setback for the party in the political circles. Sharma, a former Union minister and deputy leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament, was appointed as the chairman of the party’s steering committee in Himachal on April 26.
The most interesting thing is that a few days before Sharma’s resignation from this important post in Himachal, a similar step was taken by senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. He is also another leader of the G-23 group (group of dissident leaders in the Congress) who had resigned from the post of Congress’ election campaign committee chairman in Jammu and Kashmir after allegedly showing a rebellious attitude.
Sharma and Azad have earlier criticized the decisions of the Congress leadership. The group comprising Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Manish Tewari among many other stalwarts has been insisting on proper conduct of elections right from the block to the Central Working Committee (CWC) level.
