The total coronavirus cases in India have surged to 1,855,745 while the death toll has climbed to 38,938, as per the data released by the Health ministry. Worldwide, the pandemic has now taken nearly 7 lakh lives, with 18 million confirmed cases.
The number of novel coronavirus cases in Maharashra has crossed 4.5 lakh, over one-fourth of which is reported from Mumbai. The state has 4,50,196 infections and 15,842 deaths; at least 1,47,018 people are being treated for the disease. Mumbai has 1,17,406 cases and 6,493 deaths.
After Home Minister Amit Shah, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, now Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and CPIM leader Mohammed Salim have also tested positive for coronavirus.
Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah also tested positive for Covid-19. In a tweet, Siddaramaiah said: “I have been tested positive for #Covid19 & also been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution. I request all those who had come in contact with me to check out for symptoms & to quarantine themselves.”
The capital recorded 805 fresh cases of
Covid-19 on Monday, taking the total tally to over 1.38 lakh. The death toll, meanwhile, rose to 4,021 with 17 more succumbing to the virus in the past 24 hours.
