Scam: Beware! MHA issues warning, One code can get your phone hacked, Do Read

Cyber Fraud: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has released an important alert to protect people from a sophisticated type of cybercrime, given the rise in cyber fraud instances that prey on gullible Indian citizens. This alert focuses on a cybercrime tactic that uses stealth to empty bank accounts without authorization.

MHA’s warning for this Cyber Fraud

The most recent technique used by cybercriminals has been effectively discovered by the MHA’s Cyber Wing. In this technique, hackers prey on gullible people, robbing them of their money without their knowledge. The offenders entice victims with assurances of protection from hacking, only to start a cybercrime instead.

How does the crime work?

Scammers use a misleading tactic, according to information from the MHA, by contacting common people. Extreme care is recommended if someone receives a call claiming that their phone has been hacked and that they need to dial “*401#9818×××××6” (an unknown number). There could be significant risks involved in carrying out this action for the person.

If a smartphone user falls for the scam, the scammer can access their calls and messages without authorization by inputting a contact number after dialling *401#. The security and privacy of the user is seriously jeopardised by this.

After obtaining a one-time password (OTP), scammers are able to take over the victim’s bank account and influence the balance, even draining it entirely. This information can be used by hackers or cybercriminals to listen in on private conversations, possibly disclosing personal information.

How to stay safe?

If someone is unfortunate enough to fall victim to this kind of cyber fraud, they should report the incidence as soon as possible. A Cyber Helpline has been set up by the MHA, and its number is 1930. By calling this helpline, victims can share their stories and ask for support in coping with the fallout from the cybercrime.
