In Hinduism, this month is considered to be the month of penance. Lord Vishnu goes to nindra(sleep) for four months and wakes up from nindra on the day of Devotthan(देवोत्थान) Ekadashi. Flood
It is said that when God sleeps for four months, there is a deluge all over the world. This is the time of the annual holocaust when the world rebuilt. This cataclysm occurs in the second part of the year i.e. between July and December, when the sun moves to south. At this time the sun enters Cancer. It is said that cancer’s sign crab eats sunlight so the days become shorter during this period. There is darkness and sadness everywhere. Vishnu gets tired of handling this turmoil and entrusts all the work to his different avatars.
Time to make the earth fertile
According to the beliefs, Lord Vishnu sleeps from the 11th day of shukla paksha of Ashadh(आषाढ़) till the 11th day of Kartik’s Shukla paksha. During this period, the fertilizer capacity of the earth decreases.Avatar of Lord Vishnu makes booty and this makes the world fertile again.

Avoid travelling
It is advised not to travel during this period.In ancient time also Rishis and Munis used to travel continuously but they also avoided travelling during this period. It is also a time when the world becomes green.

At this time people celebrate a variety of festivals. People pray for adequate amount of rainfall.The month of Sawan begins after the heat of Ashadh, in which people do fasting and worship Lord Shiva with a true heart.
Introduction of Bhadrapada
After the end of sawan, the month of Bhadrapada comes during which a lot of festivals arrive. After celebrating festivals like Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, pitr paksha(पितृ पक्ष) begins. In this, the ancestors are respected.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu woke up from sleep when Mother Lakshami arrived around Diwali. Lord Vishnu marry Lakshami after waking up. Because of this, marriage start taking place from this day.
