Farmers organizations of Uttar Pradesh have started a 75-hour dharna in Lakhimpur Kheri demanding the dismissal of Union Minister Ajay Mishra ‘Teni’.
Many prominent farmer leaders, including Rakesh Tikait, are present in this movement led by the United Kisan Morcha (SKM). The farmers involved in the dharna are demanding the sacking of Union Minister Ajay Mishra ‘Teni’ because his son Ashish Mishra is an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri case of the farmers being crushed to death last year.
Farmers’ dharna is being held near Rajapur Mandi Committee near Lakhimpur City. Apart from Uttar Pradesh, prominent farmer leaders from Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana are also involved in this dharna, which will continue till September 20. Many veteran farmer leaders, including Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, national secretary Bhudev Sharma, had reached the protest site on Wednesday itself.
Bharatiya Kisan Union Doaba (BKU Doaba) President Manjit Singh Rai told media that about 10 thousand farmers of Punjab are participating in the ongoing agitation in Lakhimpur Kheri. These farmers had left for UP by train on Wednesday itself. A large number of farmers are also reaching there by their private vehicles.
State Vice President of Bhartiya Kisan Union Lakhewal (BKU Lakhewal) Avtar Singh Mahlo said that apart from the dismissal of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, farmers are also demanding withdrawal of a large number of cases registered during the agitation last year. Along with this, they also want guarantee of minimum support price for crops. He said that providing compensation to the families who lost their families during the farmers’ agitation and returning the Electricity Bill 2022 are also included in the major demands of the farmers.
