FASTAG: It appears that the Union government is introducing a new GPS-based toll-collecting system just a few years after the Fastags were put into place. The Indian government plans to build new collecting methods by March of the following year, completely replacing the toll plazas. Read on to learn more about the new move.
FASTAGs to soon be replaced by GPS-based toll collection
To lessen traffic congestion at toll plazas, according to Nitin Gadkari, a new GPS-based toll collection system is expected to be put into place in March of next year. Remarkably, the same rationale led to the introduction of the FASTag toll collection system in February 2021. In addition, according to Gadkari, the new toll collection system will make it easier to charge commuters according to how far they drive.
How does it work?
The new GPS-based toll collecting system will read licence plates and levy a price. According to Gadkari, the Centre has already tested the new system twice. While a car is moving, the system will employ cameras to recognise licence plates automatically. The accounts from which the toll price will be subtracted based on the distance travelled will be connected to the number plates.
