French Open 2024: The withdrawal of Novak Djokovic from Roland Garros will change the tennis scenario in the world. Not only will we get a new champion in Paris, but we might also see a new dominant force in this sport.
On Tuesday, Djokovic announced that he will withdraw from the French Open 2024 because of a meniscus tear in his right knee. The Serbian was struggling in his Round Of 16 match against Franciso Cerundolo.
He admitted his struggles in the post-match interview but hoped to continue in the tournament. But he was not able to as the discomfort and pain increased a lot and he had to withdraw.
Normal Injury Or A Sign?
The 24 Grand Slam winner might have blamed the slippery conditions of the court for the injury. But there is a huge possibility that it is because of the physical toll his body took while playing two consecutive five-setter matches.
These two matches combined to be 9 hours in total and at 37 years of age, it might be too much for him. However, the Serbian had admitted that he had already been carrying an injury into the tournament.
But this might have been a bad decision with Wimbledon and the Olympics so close. The Serbian would like to compete in those two tournaments at all costs, so he had to recover swiftly.
But he might be out of the Paris Olympics 2024 next month if he fails to recover. This will be a huge blow because, in his own words, he has been losing motivation to train every day, and not being part of the Olympics can kill a lot of the remaining motivation.
Djokovic has also been struggling against opponents not in the top 10 recently. And if this injury is any indication, we might see the end of the record Grand Slam winner soon.
French Open 2024: New No.1
Casper Ruud will now advance to the tournament’s semi-finals and can qualify for the finals for the first time. Significantly, Jannik Sinner has been propelled to the No.1 in world rankings.
