Ghaziabad News: Another crisis appears to be brewing in the neighbouring city of Sahibabad as the people of Loni deal with the effects of last week’s severe flooding from the Yamuna River. A surge in water levels has affected the river Hindon, a tributary of the Yamuna, flooding the Karhera City forest and other residential areas. Officials claim that because of the water entering the facility, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has taken precautions and shut down the city forest until further notice. This lush forest, which spans 100 hectares, was created by GDA and is located next to the Hindon airbase and the Hindon River. According to officials, the impacted areas are upstream of Mohan Nagar and the Hindon barrage.
Hindon River’s Inundation Causes Chaos and Assistance Seekers
The water from the river Hindon has entered the premises, according to SK Bharti, who is in charge of horticulture for the authority. The ban will last indefinitely or until the situation gets better. We were forced to shut down on Thursday after the water intrusion picked up on Wednesday. The Sahibabad neighbourhood of Karhera, which contains hundreds of homes, borders the city forest. As the water flooded the internal regions and highways on Thursday, numerous citizens could be seen looking for assistance. To stop more water from entering the area, some people tried to build little mud structures. The river Hindon’s discharge was almost 2848 cusec, flowing at a level of 200.05 metres compared to the danger threshold of 205.8 metres, according to officials from the UP Irrigation Department (UPID). Due to increased rainfall in the upstream areas, the water outflow rose during the last two days from about 2600 cusec to 2800 cusec.
Hope Rises as Hindon River’s Discharge Stabilizes
The current circumstance is only temporary, according to Binod Kumar Singh, executive engineer of UPID (Okhla), and the Hindon barrage can sustain a discharge of up to 1 lakh cusec of water. Once the discharge level stabilises, it is anticipated that the flooding in the floodplain zones would subside. The flow of the water on the floodplains and the engulfment of farms were confirmed during inspections of the river’s upstream regions by representatives of the Ghaziabad district administration. “We inspected upstream areas of the river and the water has moved on the floodplains and submerged fields there. We will check if it entered other areas,” said Vivek Srivastava, additional district magistrate (finance and revenue). Widespread flooding occurred last week in Ghaziabad’s Loni neighbourhood as a result of a break in the Alipur embankment in the Yamuna floodplains on July 13. Repairs were finished that evening, July 15. Large amounts of water entered localities during the restoration period, affecting villages, the industrial region of Tronica City, and neighbouring residential areas. In order to limit future damage and adequately address the situation in Sahibabad, the authorities are currently on high alert.
