Gyanvapi Case: A local court in Varanasi will hear a petition seeking permission to offer prayers at the Shivling found inside Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque complex. The petition has also sought ban on Muslims from the Gyanvapi complex and that the same be handed over to Hindus.
A fast-track court, in its order on the matter today, said that the petition is “maintainable”.
Main petition related to the Gyanvapi dispute
Another court in Varanasi is already hearing the main petition related to the Gyanvapi dispute. The mosque, located next to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, has been at the centre of a decades-old legal dispute.
The ‘Shivling’ was found earlier this year during a video survey carried out in the temple complex following the orders of the lower court.
Hindu women petitioners have filed a plea seeking “scientific investigation” of the “Shivling”. They contend that it is necessary to determine its age. The petition seeks permission to offer prayers year long at a shrine inside the mosque complex. They claim that ancient idols of Hindu gods and goddesses are located inside the mosque.
Objection raised by the committee
The mosque committee had objected to a scientific investigation, arguing that the case was about worshipping at a shrine inside the mosque and had nothing to do with its structure.
They argued that the structure being called a ‘Shivaling’ is actually a “fountain” that was present for the ritual ablutions..
Their plea that the Hindu side’s petition had no legal standing, has been dismissed by the court of Varanasi’s senior most judge.
