A 15-year-old boy has died in western Mongolia of bubonic plague after eating an infected marmot, the country’s health ministry announced.
The quarantine, which began on Sunday, will run until Saturday, and authorities have already isolated 15 people who came into contact with the teenager. All of them are healthy.
The case prompted the Government to impose a quarantine on a portion of the province of Gobi-Altai.
A level 3 alert, which forbids the hunting and eating of animals that could carry plague and calls on the public to report suspected cases, has been put in place until the end of the year.
Earlier this month, two other people tested positive for bubonic plague in the neighbouring province of Khovd, prompting warnings from officials in nearby Russia.
