Covid-19: Following a warning from the Center, simulated drills will begin on Tuesday at various health facilities in different states and Union territories to make sure they are prepared to handle any COVID-19-related situation. This comes in response to a dramatic rise in coronavirus cases in China. To assess the simulated exercise that would be held at Safdarjung Hospital, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will go there on Tuesday. The minister stated, “Based on our previous experience of managing this pandemic, we are undertaking several exercises, one such being the mock drill that will happen across the country tomorrow. Such exercises would help our operational readiness, help in filling gaps if any and will consequently strengthen our public health response.”

The exercise will concentrate on factors including:
The capacity of isolation beds, oxygen-supported beds, ICU beds, and ventilator-supported beds as well as the best possible availability of doctors, nurses, paramedics, AYUSH practitioners, and other frontline workers, such as ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
It will also concentrate on the human resource capacity in terms of the number of healthcare staff with training in the management of COVID-19, ventilatory management protocol for severe cases, operating PSA machines, etc. Additionally, there are Advanced and Basic Life Support (ALS/BLS) ambulances, testing tools and materials, and vital medications available.
The Union Health Ministry stressed on Saturday that it was essential that the required public health measures be put in place in all states and UTs to face any exigencies, citing the rise in COVID-19 trajectory in many nations around the world.
He said, “Preparedness of COVID-19 health facilities is crucial to ensure that states and districts are in a state of readiness to meet the increase in clinical care needs due to any spurt in cases,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter. “The objective of this exercise is to ensure operational readiness of these health facilities for the management of COVID-19.”
The additional chief secretary, principal secretary, secretary (health), and/or MD-NHM of states, who will also be required to personally monitor the exercise under the overall guidance of the health minister of the respective states, will be required to carry out follow-up on any gap assessments, according to Bhushan.
