Dehradun News: Dengue Spike Triggers Platelet Demand Surge; Blood Bank Struggles to Keep Up Pace

Dehradun News

Dehradun News: The demand for platelets has increased along with the increase in dengue cases in Dehradun. The blood bank, however, is currently only just able to match the demand. For officials, the lack of a surplus is concerning.

Dengue Numbers and Platelet Resources

This season, 174 dengue cases have been registered in the city, 24 of which are active at the moment. “We have control of the issue. We have enough platelet units on hand at the blood bank to treat patients. When patients with even moderate illnesses seek platelets, the situation becomes complicated. For the most serious instances, we must give them priority. Dr. Sanjay Jain, chief medical officer, advised the public not to panic.

Depletion Challenges Dehradun Hospitals Amid Rising Dengue Cases

A source at the Government Doon Medical College and Hospital’s blood bank, which also provides units to Gandhi Shatabdi Hospital and Coronation District Hospital, informed TOI that they are now barely fulfilling the demand. “There is no surplus. It will become a problem if there is a sudden increase. The resources also become increasingly scarce as we supply two more hospitals. At the moment, 25 to 30 units are consumed each day. Bulk storage is also not an option because platelets only last for three to five days, according to the source. On August 13, the hospital is hosting a special platelet donation drive in the hopes of producing some surplus. Additionally, officials noted that the dengue season is just halfway through, which is why they are advising the public to exercise caution for a few more weeks.
