Delhi has reported its first case of the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1, as confirmed by Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj. Out of three samples sent for genome sequencing, one was identified as JN.1, while the other two were of the Omicron variant. Minister Bharadwaj emphasized that JN.1 is a mild infection, causing only mild sickness and is currently spreading in South India. He urged the public not to panic about this development.

According to a Delhi government official, a 28-year-old patient with co-morbidities, who recently died, had the JN.1 variant. However, Covid-19 was not the primary cause of death, as the patient was referred to a private hospital and had multiple underlying health conditions. The official stated that the Covid finding was incidental, and the sample is awaiting genome sequencing results.
India has reported a total of 109 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant as of December 26, with 40 new cases. The majority of these cases were detected in Gujarat, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, with patients currently in home isolation. The JN.1 variant, known as BA.2.86.1.1, emerged in Luxembourg in August 2023 and is considered a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage of SARS-CoV-2.
