IMA advises doctors, medical practitioners across the country to avoid giving antibiotics for seasonal fever

Indian Medical Association (IMA) through social various media sites has advised doctors and medical practitioners across the country to avoid giving antibiotics for seasonal fever, cold and cough as H3N2 virus continues to rise. Notice issued by IMA Standing Committee for Anti-Microbial Resistance states that seasonal fever will last five to seven days. Further it states that even if fever goes away after three days, but the cough might last for up to three weeks.

Notice further says that the seasonal fever affects those who are over the age of 50 and below 15 years, with people developing upper respiratory infections and fever. It also adds that air pollution is one of the triggering factors. The medical body also instructed doctors to provide simple symptomatic care with no need for antibiotics. It has also urged individuals to begin taking antibiotics like azithromycin and amoxiclav without concern for dose or frequency but to stop once they felt better.

Notification also states that individuals should stop taking once they feel better since they cause resistance. It also brings to the notice that numerous other anti-biotics are being misapplied for certain illness, leading to patient illness. For example 70% of diarrhea cases are viral diagnoses, for which medicines are not required but are prescribed by the doctors.

These antibiotics are used to treat diarrhea and urinary tract infections. The widespread use of anthromycin and ivermectin during Covid and has led to resistance and it is necessary to diagnose whether the infection is bacterial or not before prescribing antibiotics.
