Kolkata Rape Case: FAIMA Ends 11-Day Strike After Positive Supreme Court Directions

Kolkata Rape Case: – The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) announced the end of its 11-day strike on Thursday, following “positive directions” from the Supreme Court. The strike was called off after the apex court urged protesting doctors to resume work and assured them that no adverse action would be taken against them upon rejoining.

In a statement posted on X, FAIMA, an umbrella body representing doctors across India, said, “#FAIMA has decided to call off the strike following positive directions from the #Chief Justice of India. We welcome the acceptance of our prayers for interim protections and the necessary steps to enhance security in hospitals. United, we will continue to fight legally.”

Supreme Court’s Intervention

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court intervened in the ongoing protest, appealing to the striking doctors to return to work while addressing their concerns. The court’s assurance that no punitive measures would be taken against the doctors once they resumed duties played a key role in the decision to end the strike.

Strike Stemmed from Kolkata Incident

The strike was initially sparked by an incident in Kolkata, which led to widespread unrest among medical professionals across the country. Several resident doctors’ associations (RDAs) had also joined the strike, expressing solidarity with their colleagues and demanding enhanced security measures in hospitals.

Widespread Support and Response

The decision to end the strike came after various RDAs, including those from prominent institutions like AIIMS-Delhi, RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and the Delhi government-run Indira Gandhi Hospital, announced their decision to call off their respective strikes. The RDAs responded positively to the Supreme Court’s appeal, leading to a coordinated move to restore normalcy in medical services.

Looking Forward

With the strike now officially over, doctors across the country are expected to return to their duties, ensuring that patient care is no longer disrupted. FAIMA’s statement highlighted that while the immediate protest has ended, the association remains committed to pursuing legal avenues to address the broader concerns that led to the strike, particularly regarding the safety and security of medical professionals in hospitals.

The resolution of this strike marks a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue between medical professionals and the government, with both sides recognizing the need for improved conditions within the healthcare sector.
