Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in his video address on Monday at an event organized to celebrate National Leprosy Day said that India is making progress as leprosy cases are coming down year after year. This year’s theme was ‘Let us fight leprosy and make leprosy history’. Mandaviya said, with the support, coordination and cooperation of the entire government, the entire society, we can achieve the target of leprosy-free India by 2027, three years ahead of the SDGs.
Reiterating Mahatma Gandhi’s abiding concern for people affected by leprosy, he said that the concern and commitment to find a cure for leprosy has its roots in our history. He said- His approach was not only to cure them but also to bring them into the mainstream in our society.
We have been able to achieve a prevalence rate of 1 case per case
Our effort to eradicate leprosy from the country under the National Leprosy Eradication Program is a great tribute to his vision. We have been able to achieve a prevalence rate of 1 case per case. The need of the hour is to make sustained efforts to eradicate leprosy. It is a curable disease, however, if not detected and treated at an early stage, it can cause permanent disability and disfigurement among the affected person, leading to discrimination against such persons and their family members in the community. Union Minister of State for Health Dr Bharti Praveen Pawar, emphasizing on the efforts of the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, said: Our leprosy program strives to detect and treat cases at the earliest, giving free treatment to prevent the development of disabilities and deformities , and of medical rehabilitation of existing maladiesfor.
The welfare allowance to patients for their reconstructive surgery has been increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000.
He also highlights achievements
Highlighting the achievements of the programme, he informed that the prevalence rate of leprosy has come down from 0.69 per 10,000 population in 2014-15 to 0.45 in 2021-22. Further, the rate of annual new case detection per 100,000 population has come down from 9.73 in 2014-15 to 5.52 in 2021-22.
