Mpox: India has reported its first case of the Mpox Clade 1b strain, the same variant that prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency last month. The case was detected in a 38-year-old man from Kerala’s Malappuram district, who had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates and tested positive last week, according to official sources.
India Reports First Case of Mpox Clade 1b Strain
The patient is currently in stable condition, marking the first confirmed case of the Clade 1b strain in India, which led to the WHO declaring Mpox a public health emergency for the second time in September.
Previous Mpox Cases in India
Earlier this month, a 26-year-old resident from Hisar, Haryana, was diagnosed with the West African Clade 2 strain in New Delhi. The patient was admitted to a dedicated disaster ward for Mpox cases and was discharged after 12 days of treatment on Saturday.
Since the WHO’s declaration of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2022, India has reported a total of 30 Mpox cases, with this latest case marking a new strain detection in the country. The health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
