Mpox: Kerala Reports Second Mpox Case, Steps Up Precautions

The state has also intensified screening protocols at airports and other entry points to detect any suspected cases early.

Mpox: Kerala has confirmed its second case of Mpox after a youth from the UAE tested positive for the monkeypox virus (MPXV), according to health department officials cited by The Indian Express. The patient, currently receiving treatment in Ernakulam, is in stable condition.

Second Case Linked to UAE Traveller, First Case Involved Clade 1B Variant

This case follows Kerala’s first Mpox infection reported last week, involving a 38-year-old man from Malappuram who also returned from the UAE. He was diagnosed with the Clade 1B variant, marking the first such case in India. The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously declared Mpox a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ due to the risks associated with this variant.

Health Department’s Precautionary Measures

In response, Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, has urged all international travellers returning to the state to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any Mpox symptoms. The health department has set up isolation wards in 14 hospitals across Kerala to prepare for any potential rise in cases and ensure prompt treatment and containment.

The state has also intensified screening protocols at airports and other entry points to detect any suspected cases early. Public health officials are conducting awareness campaigns to educate people about the symptoms and necessary precautions to prevent further transmission of the virus. Kerala remains on high alert, closely monitoring the situation to prevent the outbreak from escalating.
